Thinking in Time: The Mental Cost of Adding Another Dimension

Most of us begin by thinking in something like three dimensions. We look at a situation, identify the people and forces inside it, and try to understand how they fit together. Then, at some point, a fourth dimension enters the room: time.

Once that happens, a problem is no longer a still photograph. It acquires a slider. You can drag it backward and ask how the present was assembled, or push it forward and watch several possible futures branch away from one another. This can improve the quality of thought enormously. It can also make ordinary life heavier.

The burden comes from two directions. First, thinking across time simply demands more mental work. Second, the time axis begins to police every conclusion. An answer that looks convincing today may fail under a different starting date, a longer horizon or one unexpected event. The mind keeps reopening cases it would once have considered closed.

That makes me wonder about the psychological trouble suffered by some unusually capable people in history. Perhaps a few of them also learned to think with this permanent time slider and then discovered that they could not turn it off. I cannot prove that, of course. It is a suspicion about the price of a certain habit of mind, not a diagnosis of people who are no longer here to answer.

The problem with timeless opinions

Argumentative writing often pretends that time does not matter. The writer announces a principle, uncovers the essence of a thing and leaves the conclusion standing as if the world will politely remain where it was. Famous thinkers have done this for centuries.

I distrust that style more and more. I once described it through the second law of thermodynamics: a world moving toward greater entropy should make us suspicious of conclusions that ignore change. That is a metaphor, not a physical proof about essays or history. Still, the metaphor catches something important. Institutions decay. Incentives shift. Knowledge spreads. People adapt to rules once the rules become visible. The object being explained does not sit still while the explanation is admired.

This is also why the most aggressive use of Occam's razor can become childish. Simplicity is useful when it helps us compare explanations. It becomes silly when it is used to declare that a moving, path-dependent world has one permanent essence. The shortest account is not automatically the deepest one.

Truth with an expiry date

Time turns many firm conclusions into perishable goods. A claim can be true within one interval and false outside it. A policy can work while the population is young, the debt is low or the technology is scarce, then fail after those conditions disappear.

For people who genuinely care about truth, this is irritating. The more seriously they think, the harder it becomes to believe that truth always lives inside a neat sentence waiting to be found. Sometimes it is conditional. Sometimes it is a moving boundary. Sometimes the honest answer is a map of possible transitions rather than a final verdict.

That uncertainty adds to the mental load. A person who sees the time axis cannot easily return to a flat answer, even when a flat answer would make dinner more pleasant.

The price to pay

How do we solve this problem? My current answer is that we do not. This may simply be the price to pay.

If you want an easier life, you can give up this habit and accept more local explanations. That is not necessarily cowardice. Human attention is finite, and not every question deserves a model of the next twenty years.

If you cannot, or do not want to, abandon temporal thinking, then at least recognise its side effects. Build periods in which no projection is required. Allow some conclusions to remain provisional without immediately repairing them. Find whatever relief works, while admitting that perfect relief may not exist. The point is not to romanticise anxiety. It is to know which mental tool is producing it.

What comes after time?

Once thought expands along a time axis, other possible dimensions appear. What would they do to our understanding? What new burdens would arrive with them? I do not know yet.

One possibility is what I would call an all-data view: an attempt to observe a problem through a quantity of data no individual could absorb alone. Strictly speaking, this is not a new dimension of thought. It is an enlargement of the field of view. It could reveal patterns that remain invisible to unaided intuition.

It could also build a digital cage. A system trained on nearly everything that has already happened may become exceptionally good at telling us which futures resemble the past. If we trust it too much, the field of possibility may shrink to whatever the data can recognise. Humanity would become more informed and, at the same time, more reluctant to step beyond its own record.

And yes, by “all-data view” I mean the current deep-learning approach to artificial intelligence. I have merely changed the name to make the bargain easier to see.
